How to Apply for a Habitat Home
Habitat builds relationships with Partner/Owners first, and then builds simple, decent, affordable homes for and with them. In many ways the relationships are more important than the homes. Thank you sincerely for your interest. We look forward to working with you.
Please remember that you MUST come to an orientation in order to apply. If you miss it you will need to wait until the next application process which could be more than 1 year away!
Our program helps low income people by partnering to build a simple, decent and affordable home. This is NOT a free home program. Interested families will be required to volunteer and then they will buy the home from Habitat for a 0% interest mortgage. The process takes time and will not help with immediate housing situations.
The following are the qualifications for our home ownership program:
- Need for Housing – you need to be living in an unfit situation (with family, over crowded, unsafe, unhealthy, overpriced, homeless)
- Ability to pay – Your credit and income must meet required levels
- Credit – No foreclosures, bankruptcies, or repossessions in the last 2 years. No outstanding judgments.
- Income – You must be in the following income range. (FY2009)

Price of Homes and Payments:
The typical Habitat homes are ranch-style. The number of bedrooms and bathrooms are determined by family size however most homes end up with three bedrooms and one bath, for a total of 1152 sq. ft.; Some feature a full basement, a paved driveway and either an attached garage or a storage shed (based on local code requirements).
The houses are fully equipped with all new appliances, flooring and a landscaped lot.
The Partner/Owner will receive the keys and the deed to the house and the lot on Dedication Day at a joyous celebration.
The home is sold to the Partner/Owner at appraised value with no down payment and no interest on the mortgage. Current price of homes is approximately $50,000 to $70,000 depending on community.
Monthly payments are calculated based on income and will be approximately $300-$400 – significantly less than the average monthly rent for a comparably sized house in the Youngstown area – and includes taxes and insurance on both the house and personal possessions.
However, all amounts and terms are subject to change depending on contemporary conditions.
